So it isn't just a matter of bumping up the sampling rate. And it happens at 96k the same as at lower sample rates. I haven't tested that many so far, but of the ones that I have tested almost all of them do alias badly. And the number of 'analog' plugins (anything involving distortion) which don't alias are likely in a small minority. Aliasing affects audio in all sorts of nasty ways, making the audio quality worse than without the plugins. I do see plenty wrong with what many plugin developers are doing for profit, including smaller developers. I don't see anything negative about what he is doing. In another one, he ends up praising just about everything about the plugin under review (Valhalla Delay). I haven't watched many of the videos yet, but he does have one in which he compares a popular 1176 plugin to a hardware 1176 clone and mentions that the plugin lacks the desirable distortion of the hardware and at the same time causes a loss of clarity, with audio that demonstrates it well. But you do make a good point, that he could make specific mention per plugin of what he hears wrong in the sound. He says that aliasing sounds grainy/sandy to him (I think it sounds hashy, among other things). And the guy making the videos does mention what he hears personally in those plugins which alias. It probably pisses off some plugin developers, but those plugin developers should think about the ethics of what they are doing any way, and this SNAKE OIL series should help in kicking that off. That is of course a good thing, at least from a viewer/user perspective. The series is called SNAKE OIL, which is about trying out plugins and calling out those plugins which don't do what they claim (sound like analog) so that viewers aren't suckered into buying them. he wants to polarize and create a user base.Īlthough he might be right with his video: are his findings based on the fact that he actually can hear those nasty aliasing effects or did he just bring this issue to the table because it's a physical fact? Well, it's pretty clear to me why he does all these videos.
